Caribbean Crucible
Caribbean Crucible Documentary
Music in the Caribbean is driven by the difficult cultural roots that their society is built on and deeply rooted in tradition. For the people of the Caribbean music is ingrained in their daily lives, in their church services, and in their rituals. Church in the Caribbean is much different from western church service and is vibrant and lively and has singing throughout. Often times there is music in western church services but it is not nearly as lively and this is an example of the difference between values and culture. Singing lively songs and dancing in the church aren't just that they represent a culture as a whole that is open and active and places an emphasis on fun and singing. People throughout the Caribbean live in a vibrant environment and are constantly physically active and want to live a life that is reflective of that. I think in a way they are just a more active society than we are in the US which is good for them in terms of health in fitness. I think the downside of all of our tech luxuries is that they make it easier for us as a culture to sit around and have everything done for us. People of the Caribbean have to do most things for themselves and this is frankly beneficial to them. Another place people of the Caribbean are moved by music (no pun intended) is in the work environment. They often find that they are brought together by the songs that they sing in the workplace. Often times I find that work passes by much quicker when I have something keeping me preoccupied or something that I enjoy one of these things can be music. Equally, as much as you can enjoy and benefit from music in the workplace you can also be bothered by the music in your work environment. I find that when I'm working bad music can be as detrimental as good music is enjoyable. If I find myself annoyed at the music I'm listened to rather than motivated my day can move much slower and I will be less productive. The people of the Caribbean know that their days will go by faster when they are listening to music they enjoy and singing and dancing.
